SRB Parents
Home – school communication
Each child will receive a home school book to take to and from school each day. This is a space in which you can share positive achievements or events at home and we can communicate achievements and events at school.
We make regular weekly contact with the home school and invite staff from the home school to visit the child at the base.

ELSA information
As your child starts their placement at our base we would like to invite them to take part in our ELSA programme.
Hive members of staff are trained as Emotional Learning Support Assistants (ELSAs). We would like to work with your child on emotional issues/self-esteem/managing feelings/friendship issues. This will be for one session each week lasting 30 minutes.
These sessions will allow the children to explore emotional issues and teach them emotional literacy. During these sessions children may talk openly with us and we will treat these sessions with confidentiality, we will not share any details except with our ELSA supervisors. We will not share information with any other person or agency without agreement from you and your child (if appropriate), except when it is required by a court of law or authority, or if we believe your child or another person is at risk. We would welcome you coming to talk to us if you wish to find out more about what we will be doing.
Norfolk Steps information
At The Hive SEMH Base we strive to have positive outcomes for all children, supporting them to successfully engage and thrive in a school environment both at the base and in their home schools. This comes from the support provided by the staff and the Bases systems and practices. All staff have been trained in Norfolk Steps, a range of risk reduction strategies, which include non-verbal, verbal, and where absolutely necessary, a physical intervention. Staff will safely intervene in the following situations:
- Students are liable to cause harm to themselves
- Students are liable to harm others (either children or adults)
- Students are liable to damage property
- Students are causing serious disruption to the good order of the school
At least 95% of all incidents are resolved without the use of physical intervention. Using this approach, we are able to safeguard your child when they may be in danger to themselves or others. You will be informed as soon as possible whenever physical intervention has taken place.
If you would like further details regarding the strategies that we use with the students, please speak to any member of staff within the Base. If you would specifically like to know more about the Norfolk Steps approach that we use, please contact Hilary Anderson who is the Norfolk Steps Tutors and Committee within Norfolk County Council.
